Moorhens and others visitors

Young moorhen feeding

An unusual sight as they are very shy!

We now have a good number of moorhens - 50 years ago it was rare to see one at all. Their typical diet (when not eating grain) is water plants and invertebrates.

They can be identified by their blackish plumage with a red and yellow beak and long, green legs. Seen closer-up, they have a dark brown back and wings and a more bluish-black belly, with white stripes on the flanks.
